Biotoxin Illness Evaluation

Biotoxin Illness, also referred to as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), is a condition in genetically-susceptible people that results from specific types of environmental exposures, such as tick or spider bites, eating contaminated reef fish, direct contact with contaminated water, and exposure to water damaged buildings (WDB). Most patients with biotoxin illness have been previously misdiagnosed with conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, or anxiety and depression. Accurate diagnosis of biotoxin illness is difficult for a number of reasons:
• People often don’t realize they’ve been exposed.
• Not everyone who has been exposed develops biotoxin illness.
• The toxins cause damage to multiple body systems, creating an often unusual list of symptoms.
• The way the toxins move through the body (from cell to cell directly through cell membranes) makes them essentially undetectable by common testing methods.

The Biotoxin Illness Evaluation is designed to find evidence of the damage the toxins cause as they circulate in the body, because traditional tests cannot find the toxins themselves. Dr. Thomas begins this evaluation with a detailed discussion covering the patient’s medical history, previous diagnoses, possible exposures, and a full exploration of symptoms—no matter how small or insignificant they may seem. People who have biotoxin illness can present with a number of seemingly unrelated symptoms, including gastrointestinal problems, vision changes, memory and concentration issues, joint pain, body aches, numbness/tingling, difficulty regulating body temperature, extreme persistent fatigue, depression and anxiety, weakness, muscle cramps, and static shocks—just to name a few.

Dr. Thomas uses information about the patient’s symptoms to determine what tests are necessary to look for the evidence of biotoxin damage in the body. The tests include visual contrast sensitivity test (VCS), genetic tests, tests for various biomarkers, and brain MRI with NeuroQuant® analysis. If the diagnosis of biotoxin illness is confirmed, treatment is started using Dr. Shoemaker’s protocol.
